A Permanent Shadow is an electronic rock artist from Barcelona, consisting of CP Fletcher on vocals. Since the formation of A Permanent Shadow two years ago, Fletcher has built a small yet solid fanbase which is most definitely on the rise. The music video for his single ‘Shining Star‘ has surpassed over 71,000 views since its release two months ago, which is pretty impressive work! He is set to release his second studio album ‘Humdrum‘ in March 2022, as well as a covers EP later in the year.

Fletcher even got recognised by the iconic British rock band Simple Minds for his cover of their track ‘See The Light‘, which is incredible to say the least.

With the new album set to be released early next year, we had a chat with A Permanent Shadow to discuss ‘Humdrum‘, how social media has impacted his career so far and his connection with the late David Bowie.

Where did your band name originate from?

I came across the name on the internet and later found out it has a lot of different connotations, from dark spots on the moon to the after-effects of a nuclear disaster. As the lyrical themes of our music are rather bleak, I thought it would be an apt name for the project. Phonetically, I think it has a nice ring to it, too.

How would you describe your sound in 3 words?

New Wave indebted.

Which bands inspire you the most when writing music and why?

David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, The The’s Matt Johnson – they are all incredible songwriters in my opinion. Great lyrics, amazing songs and a huge variety in styles with an almost obsessive attention to detail. These are the people I look up to.

What advice would you give to bands starting out in the industry?

Believe in yourself and don’t let a lack of recognition deter you from keeping on, learn your craft and spend your money wisely on promotion.

What is your songwriting process?

I usually write all the lyrics and basic melodies and then work with my producer friend Albert on the arrangements. We then take the demos to the studio where another producer friend, Valentin, adds guitars, bass and some of his studio magic.

Out of all the tracks you have released, which one is the most personal to you?

There’s a song on our debut album which I wrote in the wake of David Bowie’s passing. It’s called “Sailor” and talks about how he was like a remote father figure for so many artists and how he made it ok to be different. I cried a lot the day David Bowie died.

Which song is your favourite to perform live?

Our first single “Empty” is quite uptempo and energetic, which comes across well in a live situation. The same holds for our new single “Beautiful People” which is very catchy and hummable.

How do you feel that social media has impacted your career as musicians?

In a way social media allows you to communicate directly and find an audience. That said, there’s so much information out there that it becomes hard to get heard. Maybe other artists have different experiences, but I’ve found that whenever you appear on FM radio or in print media the impact is thousandfold and increases your social media traffic, but neither Instagram nor Facebook will help you make it without the aid of more traditional media.

Who would be your dream artist to work with in the future?

As a producer I admire Youth a lot. His day job is playing bass in Killing Joke, but as a producer he’s worked with everybody from Paul McCartney to Peter Murphy. He owns a residential studio in the South of Spain, and it would be a dream come true to record there.

Who would you love to support on tour and why?

John Grant. I’d watch him every night from the wings as he’s such a great performer. I also have a feeling that his audience could quite warm to our music.

What’s next for you musically?

We’ll release the album “Humdrum” in March 2022 and have already started work on a covers EP which we hope to release towards the end of next year.

A Permanent Shadow’s new single ‘Beautiful People‘ is available to listen to on all major streaming platforms. His new album ‘Humdrum‘ is also due to be released in March next year.
