The Rasmus have just released their official song bid for Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest on May 4th in Turin, Italy.
The Helsinki rock four piece are most recognised for their notable track ‘In the Shadows’ all the way back in 2003. However, they appear to be back with a vengeance with their new single ‘Jezebel’, which was released last night (January 16).
This is the first release for the band since ‘Bones’ and ‘Venomous Moon’ with Finnish symphonic metal group Apocalyptica late last year.
The song is set to be The Rasmus’s official entry for the Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), competing for selection with six other participants to be Finland’s official representative for Eurovision 2022.
They are set to perform the track live during the selection programme on February 26th. The show is set to be shown between 9pm-11pm Finnish time (EET) – watch the final live here!
‘Jezebel’ is said to talk lyrically about ‘a girl who takes what she wants, without asking. A free spirit,’ according to The Rasmus’s vocalist Lauri Ylönen. The track was co-written by the notable American songwriter Desmond Child, who is famous for writing hits for the likes of Kiss, Bonnie Tyler and Aerosmith. Ylönen continued to talk about the collaboration saying; ‘It was awesome to work with Desmond again. He really knows how to put a hit song together.’
Child also discussed how the song came to life, stating ‘Lauri gives me a call and says ‘Hey, I need to write the biggest, greatest song in the entire world, ever. Will you do it (with me)?’ and I said ‘Yeah but I am in Folegandros (Greece)’ and he says, ‘I’ll be right there.’ ‘Jezebel’ is a homage, a tribute, to the strong women of today, who own their bodies, who are in charge of their sensuality, their sexuality, and who are determined to be an equal.’
It was also announced a few weeks ago that founding guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi had left the band, due to wanting to explore pastures new in his career. He spoke about his decision stating ‘I have decided to make my departure from the band and seek for new adventures and challenges in life. I want to thank everybody that has made this journey possible, especially all you amazing Fans, for the best moments and memories, I Love You’. Emilia ‘Emppu’ Suhonen has been officially confirmed as Rantasalmi’s permanent replacement.
This is going to be a busy year for The Rasmus, as they are also set to go out on tour around the UK/EU, starting in Hamburg, Germany on October 10th. UK fans can catch them in Nottingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol and London – get your tickets here!
