VAYA are a 3-piece rock band from Toronto, Canada, consisting of Victoria (vocals), Philpe (guitar) and Raphaël (drums). Formed in 2016, the group released their first double album two years later.

In addition to this, VAYA have also done something a little different. They released a short movie titled ‘Sexual‘ in 2020, which is also the lead single from their upcoming second studio album. Following this, VAYA won the award for ‘Best Music Video’ at Montreal’s Independent Film Festival. The movie was also nominated in the Toronto Lift-Off Festival, amongst others – what an amazing achievement!

The band are clearly going from strength to strength, so we caught up with them to have a chat about Jim Morrison, the process of writing and recording their new album and how social media has truly opened doors for them!

How would you describe your sound in 3 words?

Unique, Colorful, Experimental

Which bands inspire you the most when writing music and why?

I would say more people than band. Native North American, Jim Morrison, Classical music, poetry into spirituality.

What advice would you give to bands starting out in the industry?

Follow your heart and don’t listen to the others 😉

What is your songwriting process?

Well, it comes by itself. Almost all the time. And even I do not have to time write down the ideas if it is an important one it will come back till in is on the paper 🙂 It can be spontaneous or it can be welcome into a process I have space to receive. By the way, I am a receiver so I am always connected to Universe 🙂

Out of all the tracks you have released, which one is the most personal to you?

The full album in process. It is a huge and deep part of my everything.

Which song is your favourite to perform live?

If we are talking about the first album, I would say ELEPHANTUS.

How do you feel that social media has impacted your career as musicians?

Good question. I don’t know. The good thing is that you can be more connected to each other and reach « unreachable » people to work with because you feel doors open without feeling intimidate to contact them.

Who would be your dream artist to work with in the future?

Who would you love to support on tour and why?

An indigenous band because they have a lot to tell.

What’s next for you musically?

AAAAAHHHHHHH. Working on the second opus and hope next year it will be on stage 🙂
